Since the beginning of the TTIP negotiations between the EU and the US, arguing about the right balance between maximum transparency and necessary confidentiality has been commonplace. Commenting on today’s press conference by the Vice-President of the Commission Frans Timmermans and the Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström regarding the Transparency Initiative, the EPP Group Spokesman on International Trade, Daniel Caspary (CDU) stated:
“Better access to the current TTIP negotiations for Members of the European Parliament and citizens is a real and long overdue step. The presented innovations for more transparency in the TTIP marks a successful restart for the European Commission and especially for Cecilia Malmström. The new trade Commissioner has turned into action what the European Parliament has been requesting for a long time, and where her predecessor Karel de Gucht had failed. This step shows that Malmström not only underlined her impressive appearance during the Hearing, but also fulfills her first promise. Our shared goal must be the reduction of worries and myths – this can only happen through more transparency. But we do not forget that the TTIP is still an ongoing negotiation that will always require a degree of confidentiality”.
