Following today’s proposal by the European Commission on conflict minerals, the coordinator of the EPP Group in the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament, Daniel Caspary (EPP/Germany) said:
“The involvement of industry and commodity producers is the only viable way to improve human rights standards and the level of environmental protection at the production sites”.
“It is especially important that the proposal includes the melting process of minerals as well as the importers of raw materials in order to achieve real improvements.”
“It is crucial for industry that the Commission proposal does not create a bureaucratic monster. Instead, the EU should start negotiations with the United States on the mutual recognition of standards, in order to prevent raw materials and their production process having to be certified twice.”
